Foster + Partners reveals design for 200-metre-high Marina Tower, the tallest building in Greece

Situated at the heart of Ellinikon masterplan, Marina Tower, designed by Foster + Partners, is the first green high-rise building in Greece. The high-rise tower aims to be the greenest tall building on a beachfront in the Mediterranean.

Developed by the Lamda Development, the high-rise tower is part of the new masterplan that converts old airport site into an integrated sustainable neighbourhood. The masterplan includes several diverse neighborhoods that bring together residential, commercial, working, leisure, entertainment and cultural activities around the largest coastal park in Europe.

Antoinette Nassopoulos-Erickson, senior partner at Foster + Partners told Design City, “Ellinikon masterplan gives new direction to urban development in Athens, bringing together new ways of living, working and playing, centred on a metropolitan park – a generous amenity for local communities and the city of Athens.”

Erickson continues, “Our proposals for Marina Residential Tower build on these sustainable principles to generate a new paradigm for high-rise living and a green beacon in the landscape.”

Inspired by Greece’s vernacular architecture and building upon ecological and cultural elements, the tower embodies qualities that define Mediterranean region architecture. The 45 floors of the building host 200 apartments,   having dual-aspect of being immersed in Nature as well as offering unobstructed panoramic views of the coastline. The design promotes naturally-ventilated interiors and biophilic design elements, increasing the residents’ proximity to greenery. The focus is on promoting wellbeing through its extensive greenery and water features. The design seeks to create a new paradigm of high-rise-living.

“The Marina Tower is one of the greenest high-rise buildings in the world and is a model of sustainable design, incorporating best environmental practices and cutting-edge international safety protocols,” said Foster + Partners.

To be developed in next five years, the tower will be one of the six tall buildings developed at the Ellinikon. The masterplan aims to increase the allocation of open green space per Athenian resident by 44% and Marina Tower builds upon this, introducing greenery in the vertical dimension. Designed with a slim silhouette, the stand-alone tower’s massing has been designed from the inside out, referencing its location, providing residents an opportunity to contemplate Nature.
