CCD Turns Luo Xu red brick architectural complex into a multi-sensory dining experience

"Architecture is the masterly, correct and magnificent play of masses brought together in the light. Our eyes are made to see forms in light; light and shade reveal these forms. " Le Corbusier

Luo Xu conceived an urban sculpture in the form of several distinctive red brick buildings. The complex looks straight out of a fiction novel; its shape resembling a gigantic termite nest. This Utopia is built without a single steel bar or nail and composed of local red bricks that help blend it into nature. The structure features solid facades, curved contours and volume set at staggering heights.

Cheng Chung Design (CCD) set this unique restaurant inside a building referred to as '50 % cloud' and follows the red brick architectural complexes design language. Large-span arches and lofty ceilings extend the natural curves of the exteriors inside the building, and round openings are carved out on roofs, to let daylight inside.

The light plays a pivotal role in the CCD design for this restaurant. Guided by the light, the studio arranged all the design elements under skylights.

The quality of light has a dual role, one to illuminate the space and others to inform the diners of the passage of time and creates diversified spatial experiences.

CCD team took inspiration from the building's unique curved form and used the same language inside to inform the interior architecture. Every article in the space is an artwork. The team used the same concept to define the restaurant entrance by using a curved steel panel that leads the guest to the interior space while evoking imagination.

Natural light, along with the bricks' rough texture, soft lighting, and greenery help bring a natural element to the interior space and help produce an environment that encourages guests to interact with space. The restaurant also hosts a pixelated sculpture which draws inspiration from the 'Buddha hand', and a cloud sculpture implies infinite combinations and possibilities.
